Koi Pond Liners — EPDM Rubber & Fish-Safe Options

Koi pond liners need to hold up to more than a standard backyard pond — deeper water, higher fish load, and fish that are more sensitive to water chemistry than most species. Our EPDM rubber koi pond liners are certified fish and wildlife safe, flexible enough for any pond shape, and backed by a lifetime warranty when installed with underlayment. Free shipping on all orders.

Getting a koi pond liner right matters more than most people realize

Koi are hardy fish, but they're also long-lived ones — a well-kept koi can live 25 to 35 years. The liner you put in the ground today needs to still be doing its job decades from now. That means fish-safe materials that won't leach chemicals into the water, thickness that holds up to the pressure of a deep pond, and enough flexibility to conform to whatever shape your pond takes.

We've sold pond liners to a lot of first-time koi keepers who went with a cheaper option the first time and ended up replacing it sooner than they should have. It's one of those areas where the upfront savings aren't worth it. Get the liner right from the start and you won't think about it again for a very long time.

What makes a koi pond liner different from a standard pond liner

The short answer is depth and fish load. Most garden ponds and water features are 18 to 24 inches deep. Koi ponds are typically 3 to 5 feet deep — and serious koi keepers often go deeper. More depth means more water pressure on the liner, especially at the base and along the lower sidewalls.

Koi also produce significantly more waste than most pond fish, which means higher ammonia levels and more biological activity in the water. You want a liner material that's completely inert — one that won't react with the water chemistry or break down under those conditions. EPDM rubber has been the standard in koi pond construction for years because it checks all of those boxes.

45 mil EPDM — the right choice for most koi ponds

Our Anjon LifeGuard 45 mil EPDM liner is certified fish and wildlife safe, which means it's been tested and verified not to leach anything harmful into your pond water. It's flexible down to -40°F and up to 175°F, so it won't crack in cold winters or soften in hot summers. And because it's rubber rather than plastic, it doesn't contain the plasticizers that cause PVC liners to become brittle over time.

Installed with UnderGuard geotextile underlayment, it carries a lifetime warranty. Without underlayment, it's warranted for 25 years. Either way, it's the liner we'd put in our own koi pond.

60 mil EPDM — for deeper ponds and serious builds

If your koi pond is going deeper than 4 feet, or if you're building something you plan to be the centerpiece of your property for the next few decades, the 60 mil EPDM is worth considering. The additional thickness adds meaningful puncture resistance, which matters more as you get deeper and the liner bears more sustained pressure. Same fish-safe certification and UV resistance as the 45 mil, just more of it.

UnderGuard geotextile underlayment — don't skip this

Underlayment goes between your liner and the soil and protects the liner from punctures caused by rocks, roots, and anything else that shifts in the ground over time. For a koi pond, this matters more than it does for a shallow garden pond — the water pressure at depth amplifies any stress point on the liner. Underlayment is also required to qualify for the Anjon LifeGuard lifetime warranty. Order it to the same dimensions as your liner.

How to size your koi pond liner

The formula is the same regardless of pond shape:

  • Liner length = pond length + (2 × depth) + 2 ft
  • Liner width = pond width + (2 × depth) + 2 ft

For a koi pond that's 12 ft long, 10 ft wide, and 4 ft deep, you need a liner of at least 22 ft × 20 ft.

The extra 2 feet accounts for overlap at the edges — you'll anchor this into a trench around the perimeter of the pond. Always order slightly larger than your calculated minimum. You can trim excess liner once the pond is full, but you can't add material if you come up short.

Not sure what size you need? Call us at 888-825-6214 and we'll work through the dimensions with you before you order.

What about pond sealers and repair products?

If your existing koi pond liner is leaking, it's worth figuring out whether you have a small hole or a liner that's genuinely failing before replacing the whole thing. We carry the DuraLiner Pond Patch Kit ($39), which fixes small holes in any EPDM rubber liner using two 6"×6" patches, primer, a seam roller, and gloves. For leaks at the liner edge or between panels, the DuraLiner Edge Sealant ($1) seals seams along any EPDM liner — one tube covers about 20 lineal feet.

If the liner is older and failing in multiple spots, replacement is usually the right call. We're happy to help you think through it — call 888-825-6214.

Frequently Asked Questions About Koi Pond Liners

What is the best liner for a koi pond? 45 mil EPDM rubber is the material most koi pond builders and long-time koi keepers use, and for good reason. It's certified fish and wildlife safe, stays flexible in all climates, and holds up for decades without the brittleness that eventually affects PVC. Our Anjon LifeGuard 45 mil EPDM comes with a lifetime warranty when installed with UnderGuard underlayment — which is the combination we'd recommend for any koi pond build.

How thick should a koi pond liner be? 45 mil is the standard for most koi ponds and handles depths of 3 to 4 feet without issue. For ponds deeper than 4 feet, or for serious builds where extra puncture resistance matters, the 60 mil EPDM is worth the step up. Avoid anything thinner than 45 mil for a koi pond — the combination of depth, water pressure, and long-term use makes thicker liner the better investment.

Is EPDM rubber safe for koi? Yes — EPDM rubber is one of the most widely used liner materials in koi ponds precisely because it's inert and fish-safe. Our Anjon LifeGuard EPDM is certified fish and wildlife safe, meaning it's been tested and verified not to leach harmful substances into the water. PVC liners can also be fish-safe, but EPDM is generally preferred for koi ponds because it doesn't contain plasticizers that can degrade over time.

How deep should a koi pond be? Most koi keepers recommend a minimum depth of 3 feet, with 4 to 5 feet being better for larger koi and colder climates. Deeper ponds are more thermally stable — they don't heat up as quickly in summer or freeze as quickly in winter, both of which stress koi. Depth also gives koi somewhere to retreat from predators. If you're building a pond with any serious intention of keeping koi long-term, don't go shallower than 3 feet.

Do I need underlayment for a koi pond liner? Yes. Underlayment protects the liner from punctures caused by rocks, roots, and shifting soil — and in a deep koi pond, the sustained water pressure means those stress points matter more than they would in a shallow garden pond. It's also required to qualify for the Anjon LifeGuard lifetime warranty. The cost of underlayment is small compared to the cost of repairing or replacing a punctured liner years down the road.

How do I know what size liner to order for my koi pond? Use this formula: add twice your pond depth plus 2 feet to both the length and the width. A 12 ft × 10 ft × 4 ft pond needs a liner of at least 22 ft × 20 ft. Always round up — trim the excess once the pond is filled, rather than coming up short on a measurement. If you're not sure, call us at 888-825-6214 and we'll calculate it for you before you order.

If you're building a koi pond from scratch, take a look at our koi pond kits — they include liner, underlayment, pump, filter, and everything else you need to get started without sourcing each component separately. And if you have questions about liner sizing, material choice, or anything else, call us at 888-825-6214. We've helped a lot of koi keepers get this right the first time.
