How to Build a Koi Pond Waterfall Feature (Without Turning It Into a Headache Later)

If you've been staring at your koi pond thinking it needs something, a waterfall is usually the answer. It's the single upgrade that turns a hole full of fish into a genuine backyard destination — the sound alone does more for a patio than almost anything else you could add. But we've walked a lot of customers through waterfall builds over the years, and we can tell you the ones that go sideways almost always have the same root cause: someone treated the waterfall as a decoration project instead of a filtration project.

A koi pond waterfall isn't just landscaping. Done right, it's doing real work — oxygenating the water, keeping it circulating, and (if you set it up properly) acting as part of your biological filter. Done wrong, it's a pretty feature sitting on top of a pond that's still fighting algae and cloudy water. This guide walks through how we actually plan and build these, from sizing the pump correctly to picking a spillway that won't leak six months in.

Why a waterfall matters more for koi ponds than goldfish ponds

Koi are heavier bioload fish than most pond dwellers — bigger bodies, more waste, and they tend to live in ponds that are stocked more densely than people expect. That waste has to go somewhere, and if your water isn't moving, it just settles and builds up ammonia. A waterfall keeps water in motion and adds dissolved oxygen at the same time, which matters even more in the peak of summer when warm water naturally holds less oxygen. The short version: a waterfall isn't optional flair on a koi pond the way it might be on a small water garden. It's functionally part of your life support system.

Step 1: Figure out your flow rate before you pick anything else

This is where most DIY waterfall builds go wrong — people pick a pretty spillway first and then try to find a pump that fits it, instead of the other way around.

Start with your pond volume. For a rough koi pond, multiply length x width x average depth in feet, then multiply by 7.48 to get gallons. An 8' x 10' pond at 3' average depth comes out to roughly 1,800 gallons — a pretty common size for a backyard build.

From there, you want your pump moving that full volume through the system at least once an hour, sometimes closer to twice for heavier koi loads. For that 1,800-gallon example, something like our EPA1900 submersible pump (rated at 1,922 gph) lands right in that range without being overkill on your electric bill.

Once you know your flow rate, your spillway width follows from that — not the other way around. A wider spillway spreads the same flow thinner, which gives you that sheeting, glassy look. A narrower one with the same flow gives you more of a rushing, aerated look. Neither is "correct" — it's a style choice, but only once the flow rate is locked in.

Step 2: Decide how the waterfall connects to your filtration

There are two ways to plumb a waterfall into a koi pond, and this decision matters more than most people realize going in.

Option A: Waterfall as pure return. Water gets pulled from a skimmer, run through your filter and UV clarifier, and the waterfall is simply where it re-enters the pond. This is the setup we usually recommend — it keeps your filtration and your waterfall as two clean, separate systems that are each easy to troubleshoot on their own.

Option B: Waterfall filter box. The waterfall itself sits on top of a biological filter chamber, so water gets filtered right at the top of the falls before it cascades down. This can work well, but it puts your filter media somewhere you'll need to climb into to clean, which gets old fast on a pond this size.

For a poured concrete build specifically, we lean toward Option A almost every time. A wall-mounted bead filter setup paired with a UV clarifier gives you serious mechanical and biological filtration that you access at ground level, and the waterfall just becomes the visual and aeration payoff at the end of the loop — not something you're also relying on to trap solids.

Step 3: Choose your spillway or scupper

This is the part people actually enjoy. A few common styles:

  • Wide spillway – a horizontal lip that produces a smooth, sheeting curtain of water. Reads as more formal and modern.
  • Rock spillway / weir – water tumbles over natural stone for a more organic, "found in nature" look. Good fit for a naturalistic koi pond design.
  • Scupper – a narrower spout, often brass or copper, that projects water out in a defined stream rather than a sheet. This works especially well mounted directly into a concrete wall, since it doesn't need a shelf or basin behind it.

If you're not sold on a full waterfall yet, a scupper like the BWS2RN antique brass wall scupper is a nice middle ground — it gives you moving water and a bit of visual interest without committing to a multi-tier waterfall structure. You can always add a proper spillway later once you've lived with the pond for a season.

For a build already running around 1,800–1,900 gph, something like a dual-inlet spillway rated in that same flow range keeps the look proportional — too much spillway width for your flow and the water looks thin and weak; too little and it'll overshoot the basin.

Step 4: Get the plumbing penetrations right the first time

If you're pouring concrete, every place a pipe passes through that wall needs a proper watertight seal — this is not somewhere to improvise. We use heavy duty bulkhead fittings for every wall penetration: the skimmer intake, the return line to the waterfall or scupper, and any additional lines. It's a small, inexpensive part, but it's the difference between a pond that stays sealed for a decade and one that's slowly weeping water into your yard within a year.

A good rule of thumb: plan for one bulkhead fitting per penetration, plus a spare on hand. Concrete work isn't the place to run back to the store for a $20 fitting mid-pour.

Step 5: Don't skip aeration just because you have a waterfall

We hear this one a lot: "I've got a waterfall, do I still need a separate aerator?" Usually, yes. A waterfall does add oxygen, but only to the water actually passing through it — the rest of the pond, especially deeper water, doesn't necessarily benefit as much as people assume. A dedicated bottom diffuser system, like a koi-rated aeration kit, oxygenates the entire water column and gives you a backup source of oxygen if the main pump or filter ever goes offline overnight. Think of the waterfall as the feature and the aeration kit as the insurance policy — they're doing different jobs, not the same one twice.

A quick materials checklist

For a mid-size concrete koi pond waterfall build, you're generally looking at:

  • A pump sized to your pond's total volume (aim for a full turnover per hour)
  • A spillway, weir, or scupper matched to that pump's flow rate
  • Bulkhead fittings for every wall penetration
  • Flexible pipe and unions to connect everything
  • A filter (bead filter is our default recommendation for koi) and UV clarifier upstream of the return
  • A separate bottom aeration kit as backup oxygen support

Common mistakes we see

Undersizing the pump. People pick a waterfall for looks, then discover the pump they bought barely trickles instead of flows. Always work backward from pond volume, not forward from the prettiest spillway in the catalog.

Skipping the UV clarifier because "the waterfall aerates it anyway." Aeration and algae control are two different problems. You can have beautifully oxygenated green water. A UV clarifier is what actually keeps it clear.

Forgetting maintenance access. If your filter box or bead filter is buried under boulders with no way to reach the cleanout valve, you'll regret it the first time you need to backwash it. Leave yourself a clear, reachable spot.

Treating the waterfall as the whole filtration plan. A waterfall looks like it's doing a lot of work because it's loud and visible. The real filtration is almost always happening somewhere less exciting — in a filter box or bead filter you don't see.

Final thought

A koi pond waterfall is one of those upgrades that's genuinely worth it — for the fish, for the water quality, and honestly just for how much better the whole backyard feels with moving water in it. The builds that go smoothly are the ones where the waterfall gets planned as part of the filtration system from day one, not bolted on afterward. Get the flow rate, the plumbing, and the filtration sequence right first, and the fun part — picking out rock and choosing how the water falls — takes care of itself.
