How to Size a Koi Pond Filtration System (So You're Not Fighting Algae All Summer)

We've walked into more backyards than we can count where someone's already poured the concrete, filled the pond, and is now standing there asking why the water won't clear up. Almost every time, the answer traces back to the same thing: the filtration was sized for the pond's looks, not its actual bioload. A koi pond isn't a decorative pool with fish in it — it's a small-scale life support system, and undersizing the filter is the single most common mistake we see.

This one's less exciting than picking out a waterfall spillway, but get this part wrong and nothing downstream matters much.

Start with your actual pond volume

Before you can size anything, you need a real number for how much water you're dealing with. For a rectangular or roughly rectangular pond:

Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Average Depth (ft) x 7.48 = Gallons

An 8' x 10' pond at an average depth of 3 feet works out to roughly 1,800 gallons. Note the word average — koi ponds are rarely a uniform depth, so if you've got shallow shelves and a deeper center section, estimate the average rather than using your deepest point (which will overshoot your real volume, and your deepest point alone if used carelessly can undershoot it too — average it out).

If your pond has an irregular shape, break it into a few rough rectangles, calculate each separately, and add them together. It doesn't need to be exact to the gallon — you're aiming for a solid working number, not a lab measurement.

Match your pump to that volume, not the other way around

Once you know your gallons, the rule of thumb we use is: your pump should be able to turn over the full pond volume roughly once per hour, and closer to twice an hour if you're running a heavier koi load. For that 1,800-gallon example pond, a pump rated around 1,800-1,900 gph — like the EPA1900 submersible pump — lands right in that range.

A common mistake here is picking a pump based on how strong a waterfall people want, rather than what the pond needs for filtration turnover. Those two goals usually line up fine, but if they don't, filtration wins. A weak-looking waterfall is a cosmetic problem. Poor turnover is a water quality problem.

Choosing a filter type

This is where people get more choices than they expect, and where koi ponds specifically diverge from goldfish ponds or small water gardens.

Pad or brush filters are the simplest and cheapest option, mostly doing mechanical filtration (trapping debris) with limited biological capacity. Fine for a lightly stocked water garden. Usually not enough on their own for koi, where waste output is significantly higher.

Bead filters are what we recommend for most koi ponds, including the one we walked through in our waterfall build guide. The bead media has an enormous amount of surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize, which means strong biological filtration on top of solid mechanical filtration — and a bead filter with a blower attachment, like the PBF1800BL, makes backwashing (cleaning the media) something you can do in a couple minutes instead of a full teardown.

Pressurized filters work well when you need to plumb the filter somewhere out of sight or slightly uphill from the pond, since they can push filtered water through elevation changes that a gravity-fed system can't handle.

For a mid-size koi pond — say, that same 1,800-gallon example — a bead filter rated to your pond's volume is usually the sweet spot between cost, maintenance effort, and actual filtration quality.

Don't forget the UV clarifier

Filtration handles waste and ammonia. It doesn't do much for the free-floating algae that turns pond water green, which is a separate problem with a separate solution: a UV clarifier. Water passes through a chamber where UV light neutralizes algae cells before they can multiply into a bloom. Size this to your flow rate the same way you sized your pump — an 18-watt UV clarifier rated for around 1,800 gph and up to 2,500 gallons covers our example pond with a bit of headroom.

Skip this step and you can end up with a pond that's technically well-filtered and still turns green every June.

A skimmer keeps debris from ever reaching the filter

One more piece worth sizing correctly: a skimmer pulls debris off the surface before it sinks and starts breaking down, which reduces the workload on everything downstream. If you're building with poured concrete rather than a flexible liner, you'll want a skimmer made for that — a standard shelf-mounted skimmer won't work the same way. Putting it together: a worked example

For our recurring 1,800-gallon example pond:

  • Pump: ~1,900 gph submersible pump
  • Filter: Bead filter rated to 1,800 gallons, with blower for easy cleaning
  • UV clarifier: 18-watt, rated for 1,800 gph / 2,500 gallons
  • Skimmer: Wall-mount skimmer if poured concrete, shelf skimmer if lined
  • Aeration: Separate bottom diffuser kit as backup oxygen support (details in our aeration guide)

Every piece in that list is sized off the same starting number — pond volume — which is really the whole point. Get that number right at the start and the rest of the sizing mostly falls into place on its own.

The bottom line

Filtration is the part of a koi pond build that nobody takes photos of, which might be exactly why it's the part most often shortchanged. Spend the time getting the volume calculation and the sizing right before you fall in love with a specific spillway or rock arrangement — it's a lot cheaper to correct a filtration decision on paper than to rip out concrete six months later.
